The Yoshida Tatami Store was founded in 1830 at the end of the Edo era.
For over 180 years, spanning ten generations, the Yoshida family have been producing some of the finest traditional Tatami mats available anywhere.
Everyday they strive to produce the highest quality mats putting their heart and soul in to each one they make.
Their goal is to not only make one of the most comfortable Tatami mats you can find but to also pass along a piece of Japanese culture to future generations as well.

About Tatami Mats


Tatami mats have been around for thousands of years.
Whether you are in Japan or other parts of the world you will enjoy the comfort and refreshing feeling of lying on a Tatami mat.
One of the key parts of our mats is the use of Igusa rush grass, the straw of the mat.
Made of rice straw and sea rush grass (Igusa, Junius effusus)they are beautiful, comfortable and work wonderfully even in high humudity areas like you find in Japan.


“Igusa(Juncus effusus) “with the common names common rush is a perennial plant/perennity herbaceous species in the family Juncaceae.
Also Juncus means “Tie” in Latin.
Originally from India it was introduced thousands of years ago in Japan via the Silk road trade routes.
Igusa straw is the perfect material to use in the construction of Tatami mats. Flexible, strong and light it brings a wonderful feeling of calm and comfort.

At Yoshida all our mats are made with the finest of Igusa straw available.

Our Storage Box Tatami is a raised design. Beautiful and functional all in one.
You not only get the benefits of Tatami mats but also generous storage space too.
The design raises the Tatami mat a little over 1 foot off the ground (33 cm)The multi-purpose designs available are as a bed, bench or a Traditional Horigotatsu (sunken table heater).
